These papers consists of correspondence, 1851-71; family papers, 1853-1967; financial documents, 1950-59; legal documents, 1771-1952 [broken series], literary productions, 1902-52 and undated; clippings, undated; photographs; printed materials, 1912-67; subject files, 1898-57 and undated; and his Wake Forest College files, 1912-57. These papers related to Oates' concern with prohibition, temperance, and the North Carolina Anti-Saloon League. Included are materials on Wake Forest College, of which he was an alumnus (Class of 1895), and later a trustee.
